Types of Metal Detectors
Although there are really two different types of metal detectors, I like define them into three basic categories:
1. Very low frequency (VLF) Metal Detectors
The are general all around machines for park and field hunting. Some models with multi-frequency are also suitable for beach hunting.
2. Pulse Inductive (PI) Metal Detectors
These machine are primarily used for Beach hunting where mineralized soil is an issue.
3. Prospecting Metal Detectors (Advanced PI Machines)
Theses machine are primarily used for prospecting and nugget hunting.
How does a metal detector work?
A metal detector works by generating a magnetic field which is sent through the ground or a particular area. When the magnetic field encounters a metallic object, it induces an electrical current within the metal, creating another magnetic field that opposes the original magnetic field. The metal detector’s coil detects this change in the magnetic field and sends a signal to the control box, which processes the signal and alerts the user with a beep or other indication. The user can then use the metal detector to locate the object and dig it up. Metal detectors are commonly used in treasure hunting, security screening, and archaeological exploration.
There are two main technologies used in metal detectors:
- Very Low-Frequency (VLF) technology: This technology is based on two coils, a transmitter coil and a receiver coil. The transmitter coil sends a magnetic field into the ground, and if there is a metal object in the vicinity, it will disrupt the magnetic field, creating an eddy current in the metal object. This eddy current produces a magnetic field that is detected by the receiver coil. The metal detector then analyzes the strength and characteristics of the signal to determine the type and location of the metal object.
- Pulse Induction (PI) technology: This technology uses a single coil that acts as both the transmitter and receiver. The metal detector sends short bursts of high-frequency magnetic pulses into the ground. If there is a metal object in the vicinity, the pulse will induce an electrical current in the metal object. When the current stops, the magnetic field generated by the current collapses and produces a secondary magnetic field that is detected by the coil. The metal detector analyzes the strength and duration of the secondary magnetic field to determine the type and location of the metal object.
Both VLF and PI metal detectors have their own advantages and disadvantages, and the choice of technology depends on the specific application and user preferences.
